Crypto Option Expiry: Cash, Delivery and Reference Prices

Start with the contract specification

Exercise style, expiry and fulfilment belong to a particular product. European and American exercise rules differ, as do buyer rights and seller obligations. Check contract size, currency and instrument code rather than assuming every bitcoin option works alike.

The option category in a product name cannot replace its specification. Settlement asset and contract multiplier directly affect obligations. Begin any example with how much underlying one contract represents, rather than treating the displayed number of contracts as the same number of coins.

The right described by an option is resolved under the product's expiry and exercise rules; European and American exercise styles create different timing choices.

Distinguish cash and physical settlement

Cash settlement pays a specified difference, while delivery exchanges the designated assets. The payment currency can differ from the underlying. Collateral and fees still matter, and a displayed gain is not necessarily a completed credit to an available balance.

Cash differences depend on position direction, and a seller may owe a payment. Delivery can require assets or funds to be ready in advance, with venue-specific failure handling. Keep unknown requirements explicit instead of assuming the platform will resolve every funding problem automatically on behalf of the customer.

Cash settlement pays a defined difference, while physical delivery exchanges the specified assets; collateral and obligations depend on the contract.

Read the reference price method

A settlement index can average observations over a window rather than use a venue's last spot trade. Confirm time zone, rounding and disruption fallbacks. A calendar date without a time should not be treated as midnight in the reader's location.

Use both UTC and local time when a reference window crosses midnight or daylight-saving changes. A configurable interface zone does not alter the official expiry instant. Understand fallback pricing before disruption occurs rather than evaluating a settlement only against a screenshot from one spot venue afterwards.

The settlement index may average a window and differ from a last traded spot quote; verify expiry time zone, rounding and disruption procedures.

Check automatic exercise conditions

Automatic exercise, notification deadlines and opt-out rules vary. Confirm funding requirements before expiry. A hypothetical difference between strike and reference price still requires the relevant fee treatment. Such arithmetic explains settlement and does not forecast an upcoming expiry price.

For a fictional one-unit contract, a difference of ten and fee of one can illustrate a net nine. Explain that direction, multiplier and currency can change the result. Show adverse outcomes and funding needs as well; one profitable example is not evidence that an option strategy works.

Review automatic exercise, fees and notification cut-offs before expiry, using a hypothetical example rather than predicting settlement prices.

Reconcile the completed event

Preserve specifications, position quantity, settlement price, charges and credit time. Separate a closing trade from expiry processing. Check units and rounding before escalating a discrepancy through official support, and avoid attributing every expiry-related movement to manipulation without evidence.

Afterward, distinguish expiry settlement from forced liquidation and voluntary closing trades. They can produce different charges and explanations. Include product code and date in a support query. For a dispute, cite the original specification and published response rather than asserting unverified manipulation or an unconditional entitlement to compensation.

Before relying on any example, reread whether quoted premiums, collateral and settlement use the same currency. An inverse or coin-denominated product can require another conversion, so familiar dollar arithmetic may not apply unchanged. Keep a copy of the contract rules applicable when the position was opened and any subsequently announced change. This preserves the basis for a support query without implying that an archived screenshot overrides the venue's actual governing terms.

A useful worksheet for this topic has separate entries for exercise style, expiry clock, reference price and settlement. Fix one set of fictional inputs, change one condition at a time and identify which conclusion moves. Retain units, observation time and source beside every number. An unknown input should remain unknown rather than becoming zero by default. The purpose is to expose methodological dependence, not select the most flattering outcome. Before using the result for a real-money decision, compare its assumptions with actual fees, available liquidity, household spending needs and the loss the user can afford. A clean calculation cannot remove those constraints.
