Separate legal entitlement from recovery
Inheritance combines legal entitlement with technical access. A seed does not prove lawful ownership, and a will does not ensure relatives can locate or recover a wallet. Inventory custodial accounts, wallets, contract positions, debts, and restrictions, then obtain appropriate estate and tax advice. Cross-border families face different residence, succession, and service rules. A generic online template cannot establish validity for every asset and jurisdiction.
Layer instructions and secrets
Instructions can describe assets, providers, contacts, and how protected recovery material is located without placing all secrets in ordinary wills or emails. Executors, beneficiaries, and technical helpers need different access. Multisig, passphrases, and distributed backups create their own dependencies; excessive complexity can defeat lawful recovery. Document why the arrangement was chosen and ensure its protection and usability match the capabilities of the people expected to follow it.
Rehearsals and trusted contacts
Test clarity, tools, and address verification using a dedicated test wallet. Rehearsal need not disclose all real secrets or create recordings of recovery words. Custodians may have deceased-customer procedures; preserve official routes, document requirements, and limits rather than impersonating the deceased. Trusted contacts can check readiness, but technical assistance and legally authorised estate administration are different roles that should be defined explicitly.
Update assets and beneficiary arrangements
Review after moves, family changes, wallet migrations, and provider closures. Preserve costs, valuations, fees, and histories for professional assessment rather than assuming inheritance is tax-free everywhere. A sole authenticator on an old phone can obstruct custodial recovery even when a blockchain seed is backed up. Version the plan and verify replacements before retiring old material. The goal is workable lawful access with limited premature disclosure.
